Even though Delaware’s grape growing history can be traced as far back as the early 1600s, the state’s first established winery has only been making wine since 1993, and nearly ten years elapsed before a second winery opened its doors.

With a modest annual production, the state currently has five wineries in operation. The small size of Delaware’s wine industry is enigmatic, as the climate is actually well-suited to grape growing, and the three surrounding states of New Jersey, Maryland, and Pennsylvania have thriving wine cultures.

Want to know more about the wine industry in Delaware? Here ya go!

The first and largest winery in Delaware is Nassau Valley Vineyards. Located in Sussex County near Delaware’s beach resorts, Nassau Valley produces award winning fruit and grape wines. As a farm winery, all aspects of the wine making process are completed on-site, including everything from cultivating the vines to the final bottled product.

Their wines are primarily crafted from French hybrids, such as Chambourcin, Seyval Blanc, and Villard Blanc, and vinifera varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Franc. In addition to wine tastings, visitors can choose to take a self-guided tour of Nassau Valley’s history of wine museum, a five gallery exhibit chronicling over 8,000 years of wine history. For instance: Did you know that Egyptians invented the wine press?

Or that the origins of modern day wine making can be traced back to Mesopotamia? If you would like to sharpen your trivia skills at your next wine tasting, Nassau Valley Vineyards is the perfect place to experience Delaware’s wine industry.
