Wine Madness Champion: Chardonnay

Wine Madness Championship

Our Wine Madness brackets are now complete and we have a champion to crown, Chardonnay! Going into the finals, Malbec was definitely a long shot. As a 6 seed facing a 1 seed, it had its work cut out for it. We have to give the red wine props, though, for making it as far as it did. We have a feeling that we will be hearing a lot more about Malbec in the years to come. At least we hope to–because we really love it.

Chardonnay is one of those wines that people always seem to go back to as a default white wine both for personal consumption and for gift giving. Almost every white wine or mixed wine club that we have reviewed has included Chardonnay at some point, and Chardonnay of the Month clubs are very popular.

Is it popular just because people are exposed to it more often? Maybe. It's easy to pair with. It's readily available. And it is becoming traditional. That doesn't mean we shouldn't continue to expand our horizons and try other varietals, though. There's a world of red and white wines out there waiting for their shot at the championship, too.

Thanks for playing along with us these last couple of weeks. We had a good time reading your votes and responses as we narrowed down the 16 wines to one winner. Although really we are all the winners when we find wines that we like. It doesn't matter what anyone else likes, it matters what YOU like.

As a fan of Michigan State University, I found myself unable to cheer for U of M.

    However, Chardonnay???

    Chardonnay???

    Arggh.

    I can’t cheer for Chardonnay.

…but, alas, Tricia – you say it best with the last line of your post: “It doesn’t matter what anyone else likes, it matters what YOU like.”

    😉

    Good times….

      Aren’t you glad it wasn’t Riesling? 🙂
