Washington Post Wine Club Review (with video)

The Washington Post

Washington Post Wine ClubI recently received a shipment from the Washington Post Wine Club, and took the time to do a little video review of the service. Of course, my daughter was watching me do the video, and wanted to join in, so she did a little recording afterwards. Then Todd, with his video editing magic, spliced things together and came up with this final product:

The Washington Post Wine Club is a great little club whose only relation to the newspaper is the name. But the selection of wines from the club is better than I expected (coming from a club tied to a newspaper). You can read my full review of the Washington Post Wine Club, but I also wanted to share with you my experience with one of the bottles.

My shipment came with:

  • 2012 Valley View Viognier, Rogue Valley
  • 2012 Pierre Henri Saint-Fiacre, Muscadet Sevre et Maine Sur Lie
  • 2011 Vietti Tre Vigne Barbera D'Asti
  • 2012 Finca Ayles Aldeya, Carinena
  • 2012 Edgebaston The Pepper Pot, Stellenbosch
  • 2012 Chateau Cransac Resolument Negrette Fronton
Canadian Thanksgiving dinner

Washington Post Wine Club served at our Canadian Thanksgiving dinner. Yes, I see the irony here.

I received the Jefferson Wine Club, which was welcomed as along with 4 bottles of red wine, it contained 2 bottles of white wine (and I was out of white). We were celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving (I'm close to Buffalo, where Canada is North, West AND South of me), and needed to find a bottle to serve with dinner. I chose the 2012 Valley View Viognier, as my wife made a sausage stuffing to go along with the turkey, and the tasting notes for this bottle said the wine went well with “…chicken or pork with warm spices…” In fact, the recipe pairing which came with the tasting notes was for an Apple-Chicken Sausage with Apricot-Pepper Relish, so we were working with very similar foods.

The wine was delicious, and the tasting notes made it easy to reinforce my knowledge of which wines to choose with which dishes (although I've been doing this for some time now, I still like to know the wine that I'm choosing is the right choice).

Now for the good part:

Washington Post Wine Club Coupon

With this coupon, your first shipment from the Washington Post Wine Club is just $45 (plus about $20 shipping and $5 in taxes = roughly $70). If you want to experience a wine club, this is a great way to get started. These wines are definitely worth more than the $12 per bottle that you're paying for your first shipment.
