We review wine clubs.
We independently research every club that we review. Although we may receive free samples or commissions on some sales, our opinions are always our own.

Giving California Wine as a Gift

California Wine GiftsWhen I think about my trips to California, the one thing I know I want to do again is visit Wine Country. There's just something about the history and the beauty of California wines that makes me want to visit again. But since I know I won't be getting there any time soon, the next best thing is to join a wine club with great wines from California. If you know someone who needs to be introduced to California wines, consider gifting them with a wine club.

The California Wine Club

The obvious first choice is The California Wine Club. They started out specializing in wines made in California, although they have since branched out to a Pacific Northwest Club, and International Club, and other specialty clubs. Their most popular club remains their Premier Series. The Premier Series features wine from small California artisan wineries. Every month the staff hand-picks 2 different award-winning wines for the club and ships them with tasting notes, information about the wineries, and great wine tips. They also include a pairing recipe on their website.

Believe me when I tell you that drinking a bottle of the wine from the Premier Series while reading about the winery and the tasting notes will make you want to hop on a plane to California and visit the winery yourself! And every month they run different specials on the club, which we always include on our The California Wine Club Premier Series Review Page.

Gold Medal Wine Club

Another great wine club in the same price range is the Gold Medal Wine Club Gold Series. It also includes 2 bottles a month and wines are chosen from small family-owned and operated wineries in California. The Standard Mix is one bottle of red and one bottle of white, although is may sometimes be 2 reds. Each shipment comes with The Wine Press, their newsletter that includes information about the wines and the history of the winery.

We have full reviews of the Gold Medal Clubs including pictures and videos. For gift giving you will love their festive wrapping and personalized greeting card.

Club W

A third great choice for California-specific wines is Club W. Club W is unlike the other wine clubs mentioned in that they do not pick out specific wines for you each month. Rather, you take a palate profile quiz and they then recommend wines from the current selections. You can either take their recommendations or choose other wines from the list. Some of the current California Wines include:

  • 2014 Steel Kitten Port (Santa Barbara County, California)
  • 2013 Likelihood of Confusion Zinfandel (Sierra Foothills, California)
  • WKND American Sparkling White Blend (California)
  • 2012 Marmont Chardonnay (Edna Valley, California)

Wines on the site start at $13 and through our special deal you can get 3 bottles for the price of 2.

If you aren't sure where to start when deciding which club to send, the best thing you can do is jump to the Shipping State Page for where you want to send the club. That will narrow down your club choices while still providing you with our reviews and ratings for each club.

And as always, we love to show you our favorite wine of the month clubs to give as gifts below.  And yes, these all feature wines from California!
