Winegrowing in Rhode Island dates back to 1663 when King Charles II insisted the colony pursue viticulture in the region’s Royal Charter. While this tradition was maintained until Prohibition, the modern-day wine industry was not established until 1975, the year Sakonnet Vineyards began producing wine in Little Compton. With significant year-round maritime moderation from the Gulf Stream, Rhode Island has a climate particularly well-suited to grape growing.

Consequently, the state is able to successfully grow many French hybrid and vinifera varietals, including Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Landot, and Lemberger.

Rhode Island’s vineyards are located in the Southeastern New England American Viticulture Area, a coastal region encompassing the area south of Boston into Rhode Island that stretches toward New London, CT and never extends more than fifteen miles from the coast.  The proximity to the Atlantic coastline helps stabilize temperature fluctuations throughout the year, creating an ideal climate for viticulture.
