Best Low and No-Alcohol Wine Clubs

We know what you are thinking. What does “Wine Club Group” know about wines that have low or no alcohol? Isn't that the opposite of their brand? Actually, we have been doing a lot of research this year about these clubs for various reasons! Read on to learn more about low and no alcohol wine as well as clubs you can subscribe to or order as gifts.

What Are “Low Alcohol” and “No Alcohol” Wines?

Regular wine tends to be between 11-15% ABV (Alcohol By Volume). To be considered “low alcohol,” a wine is typically 5.5-10% ABV. To be considered “no alcohol,” they must be less than 0.5% ABV. “Alcohol-free” is rare but would be 0.0% ABV. These wines are sometimes regular wine where the alcohol has been removed and sometimes wines where either fermentation was stopped early or less efficient yeast was used in production.

Who Are These Wines Made For?

Aside from the obvious, there are a lot of situations that call for these types of wines, and it makes them good to have on hand when you are entertaining. Here are some some of the reason that our friends and family members have given for embracing these wines:

  • Pregnant women
  • People with medical conditions or who are on specific medications
  • Health-conscious people
  • Designated drivers
  • Dieters who are looking for drinks with lower calories (sometimes 90% less calories than regular wine)
  • “Sober Curious” who are cutting back on alcohol but not quitting completely
  • Religious abstainers
  • People in recovery from drug or alcohol abuse
  • Newer drinkers who are not used to higher alcohol content drinks
  • “Dry January” participants

It's possible that even a regular wine drinker will want to switch to a low or no alcohol as the night goes on to avoid a hangover or excessive consumption.

Where Can You Buy No Alcohol and Low Alcohol Wine?

What used to be a specialty item is now popping up all over the place! Most liquor stores will now carry a few varieties, and your grocery store will likely have a couple if they are a larger chain. Health food stores and natural markets are another safe bet.

Our choice, online!

We have started reviewing clubs that focus completely on these wines, but some of our clubs that allow you to choose your own bottles now offer them as well!

The Zero Proof: Featuring both red and white wines as well as sparkling and rose. Bottles are around $15-20, which is much less than you will find them at most stores. They also have “varietals” that wine drinkers will recogize such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, GSM, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Blanc de Blanc. You can purchase by the bottle, by the bundle, or even join the quarterly club

Plonk: As an organic/natural wine company, it's not surprising that Plonk has now extended into no alcohol wines. They offer various bundles that range from 4 non-alcoholic bottles to packs that include both non-alcohol and regular alcohol if you are looking for an organic, sustainable variety. These 4 bottle packs all sell for $135-175.

Firstleaf: One of the most popular clubs on our site, you can choose your wines as part of your subscription delivery. They currently have 37 different wines including prosecco, vinho braco, tempranillo, chardonnay, cino tinto, and more that are listed as “Lower Alcohol.” Because they define that as below 12% ABV, you will want to look at these closely if you are going for closer to “no alcohol.”
